Call / Contact Centres
Glasgow has developed a reputation as one of the UK's leading call/contact centre locations and continues to attract customer contact centres and transaction processing jobs to the city.
Much of Glasgow's success in the call centre field is down to its people and the Glasgow accent which has been ranked in a recent BT survey as the most desirable for telephone-based work.
Although call centres evolved originally from the financial service industry, these days most sectors operate call centres.
Types of jobs vary greatly and include customer service representative, telesales executive, call centre operator (inbound and outbound), telemarketing agent, and debt recovery officer.
Administration
Jobs within this sector are set to increase over the next 10 years. Many organisations regardless of the type of industry employ administration staff to aid the smooth running of the business.
Opportunities exist at all levels and for all ranges of experience. Types of jobs available include office junior, clerical assistant, receptionist, secretary, and administrator.
Hospitality
Glasgow is the third most popular destination for overseas visitors after London and Edinburgh and has become a vibrant and cosmopolitan centre with new hotels, restaurants, bars, visitor attractions and leisure facilities opening up across the city.
This has produced an abundance of opportunities in a wide range of jobs such as catering assistants, chefs, bar staff, receptionists, waiters/waitresses, hotel porters to name but a few.
Many of the jobs in the hospitality/tourism sector are customer-facing and seek to attract interested applicants who have good communications skills, smart appearance and a customer focus.
Retail
After London, Glasgow is the second biggest retail centre in the UK offering job opportunities for people who enjoy working with the public in a sales environment.
Retail staff are employed in a wide variety of outlets selling consumer goods which range from stationery to clothes. Responsibilities typically include advising customers on purchases, stock control, displaying goods and cash handling.
